Curricular Planning

All the programmes taught in the college are affiliated to the University of Calcutta and hence, all
departments are required to implement the syllabus prescribed by the University of Calcutta.
Our institution, equipped with a student-friendly academic ambience, believes in imparting to its
students a holistic education that is based on a definitive curricular module.
The University-set Curriculum for undergraduate classes, (both Honours and General) is first
deliberated upon and subsequently allocated to respective faculty members of each department.
Having attended syllabus workshops and seminars on different curricular aspects, faculty members
often become better-equipped to conduct classes on topics introduced in the new CBCS curriculum.
The institution documents the curriculum through printouts provided to the different departments,
copies of which are also retained in the College Library and Departmental Seminar Libraries.
Master routines distribute the classes equally among all departments. The teaching plans consist of a
detailed apportionment of the syllabus among all the faculties of a particular department. The
apportioning is done democratically through discussion among faculties in departmental meetings.
The Timetable Committee headed by the Principal and a senior Faculty Member draws up a detailed
timetable which efficiently deploys the units of time for academic and co-curricular purposes. Theory,
practical, tutorial, ICT, life-skill and value education classes ensure a balance between the different
types of engagement a student is expected to participate in.
The departments strive for effective curriculum delivery through a combination of time-tested and
well planned methods like a set of teaching plans based on a detailed academic calendar yet flexible
enough to permit changes.
Microphones and audio-visual aids are available so that classroom delivery retains clarity and
vibrancy. The college is well equipped with smart class rooms, virtual class rooms, audio-visual and
other ICT facilities which are used by teachers in day to day teaching to make the delivery of the
curriculum attractive to students.
Interactive teaching is promoted through students’ participation in group discussions, quizzes,
seminars and mentoring.
Special lectures delivered by eminent scholars on topics related to the curriculum on campus,
alongside student participation in special lectures held in other colleges, further intensify the students’
learning experience.
Tutorials/projects, class tests and internal assessments comprise the formal evaluative processes.
Students are encouraged to interact with faculty members even beyond classroom hours for doubt-
clearing and curricular discussions. Extra hours are devoted to taking remedial classes after
completion of internal examinations to bolster students’ preparedness before University examinations.
Since our institution specializes in the Humanities and the Social Sciences, our students are
encouraged to observe, analyse and gain insight into various intricate aspects of their syllabus through
experiential learning, through field trips like the one organised by the Dept of Geography to the
Chintamoni Kar Bird Sanctuary, on 26th February, 2019, Darjeeling in 2023 or by attending regular
documentary screenings and discussions in the American Centre as on 11th May, 2019, by the
students of English and History or through Faculty and Student Exchange Programmes, conducted by
the Depts of Bengali ,History, Philosophy to name just a few.
