OBJECTIVE AND PROGRAMMES

In keeping with its pledge to respond to social issues the Women's Study Cell was set up with the intention of fostering gender awareness among its students. Primarily an extension of Vikashini, an organization for the dissemination of education among adults and children set up in 1990, which was sponsored by AIACHE during the initial years of its existence, the Women's Study Cell is dedicated to imparting confidence in impressionable young minds to stand up to gender discrimination, sexual assault and other forms of harassment faced by women in today's society.

The cell oparetes by organizing wokshops and interactive sessions in association with NGO's like Swayam, Sanhita, Thoughtshop Foundation, Jabala etc. Eminent Personalities from all works of life such as academics, medicine and law are invited to make presentation and conduct programmes and help enrich students on various women related issues. The practical and need based approachy of the Women's Study cell is reflected in the regular organization of wokshops on Self-defence and reproductive health awareness, stressing the urgent need to built up a defence mechanism to overcome the natural vulnerability of the female body.

 

 

 

 

Activities of Women's Study Cell in 2008

Women's Study Cell and Cine Club jointly organized the screening of a film on women's rights entitled The Day I became a women on 8th March, 2008.

Women's study cell and Sanhita jointly organized a workshop which was a part of the "WE CAN" programme on March 19,2008. The Workshop addressed the following issues -

(a) Socialization of Women.

(b) Violence against women : defining violence

(c) Combating violence against women : Existing laws such as the protection of Women against Domestic Violence Act 2005 from violence and survival strategies.

(d) WE CAN Changemaker -how changemakers can carry forward the campaign

The students, teachers and non - teaching staff contributed sarees, bedsheets, sweaters and blankets to the Bihar Flood Relief fund. The contribution was handed ever to the volunters of Thoughtshop Foundation by the representatives of Women's Study Cell and Vikasini on 17th September 2008.

"A Women's Health Awareness Programme on HIV/AIDS" was organized by Pepsico India Holdings Pvt. Ltd. (Fritolay Division, Kolkata) under the joint banners of Vikasini and Women's Study Cell on 23rd September 2008.

 

ACTIVITIES OF WOMEN'S STUDY CELL IN 2007

An interactive session on "Women and Disability" was organized jointly by the Society for the Welfare of the Blind, Narendrapur, Vikashini and Women's Study cell of Women's Christian College, Kolkata on 10th March, 2007 to celebrate International Women's Day. The main objective behind such a programme was to create social awareness about disabled persons.

Women's Study cell conducted a quiz contest on 17th April 2007 based on the campaign "WE CAN" organized by Thoughtshop Foundation.
