01. HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

 Department of Sanskrit is as old as the Women’s Christian College and from past to present it has had a glamorous and prosperous movement.

 In the galaxy of starry students of the department, those who shone with their illuminating brilliance and enriched the scholarly world are mentioned here. Professor Somtilata Chakraborty and Professor Chitra Roy ranked first class first in B.A. honours. Professor Gita De, Professor Bandana Banerjee, Professor Shipra Banerjee, Smt. Arundhati Chakraborty, Dr. Chitralekha Mallick, Professor Bandana Som, Professor Leena Banerjee, Professor Sukla Sen, Dr. Papri Roy, Dr. Aparna Mukherjee, Smt. Mon Banerjee, Smt. Suparna Addy, Smt. Pampi Roy Choudhury.

 Among these scholars Professor Bandana Banerjee and Professor Shipra Banerjee adorned the chair of the Head of the Department of Sanskrit of this College. Dr. Jayasri Chattopadhyay former Head of the Department of Sanskrit was one of the brilliant students of this department and an eminent scholar. She ranked first class first in M.A. Examination from Rabindra Bharti University and awarded Ph.D. in Sanskrit and D.Lit in Bengali. She was awarded with ‘Kavyatirtha’ title from Sanskrit Sikha Parishad.

H. PARENT - TEACHER MEETING

In the every academic year Department of Sanskrit is organizing regularly Parent- Teacher meeting for the students of I year. Honurs.

Sanskrit Day on 20th March, 2008 at 1 p.m. A special lecture was arranged for that day. The resource person was Dr. Mahua Mukhopadhyay, Head Department of Dance, Rabindra Bharti University, ‘Role of Gondiya Dance in Sanskrit'

4. Departmental Magazine

 The name of the departmental magazine is' MADHVI'. The first issue was published in April, 2004. The second issue was published in January, 2006. The third issue will be published in May, 2009.

 

5. Departmental Library

 There are 180 books in the seminar library. No contribution is accepted from the students. The teachers contribute to maintain this library for facilitating the students.

  • In the year 2003, a book was published, entitled "Laws of Adoption in Ancient India - A Economic study," by Publisher, New Deli.
  • In the year 2005, an article named " The Political thoughts of Manusamhita" was published in the Departmental Jaurual-' ESANA' - departmental Jourhal of Sanskrit, Mahadevananda College.

In the year 1997, 'RAMAYANE MATSYA' in Bengali was published in the journal named 'JAHNABI" (Silver jubilee volume).

In the year 2003, " B usiuess and Commerce in Ancient India [As depieted in the Sanskrit Literature"] was published in the proceedings of 54th. Orientation Programme- sponsored by UGC and Academic staff College, Calcutta University.

In the year 2004, "Royal Charters and Administrative Documents in Ancient India" was published in the Research Jourual named "IMAGES"- Journal of Women's Christion College, Vol. I.

In the year 2006," Export Business of Gems in Ancient India" was published in the Research Jourual named 'MIND SPACE' -Academic Journal of Rani Birla Girls' Collge, Vol. I, No.I.

Inthe year 2007," The Historical, Geographil and Cultural Aspects of the Northern Itinerary of Raghu as deacribed by Kalidasa' was published in the Research Jourual of the depieted of Sanskrit, Jadavpur University named ' ANVIKSA', Vol.XXVIII.

Inthe year 2007,"Technique of the Manufacture of stone Beads in Ancient Ujjain" was published in the proceedings of UGC sponsored National Conference on" Sanskrit in globalised era a torch or a Carps" of the sanskrit Department of Krishna Girls' College' Howrah.

Awarded " PAROMITA BOSE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP" from University of Calcutta in the year 1993.

 

4. SMI. SHOMOSREE ROY CHOWDHURY

Worked as a Research Assistant [201-205] in a project work under D. S. A. (Department of special Assistancc), Sanskrit Department Jadavpur University; sponsored by U.G.C. The research work was published in the form of Book entitled- "A Dirctionary of Technical Terms in Kautilya's Arthashastra."

 

8. Achievements of Students.

All the students of 1st year and 2nd year secured honours marks in B.A. Part-I and Part-II examintions in 2008.

* Sm.Mou Banerjee ws a starry student of this Department and got Ist class both in B.A. Honns. Exam.1999 and in M.A. Exam.2001, from Calcutta University. At present she is working as a teacher in Kalyanbrata Sangha High School of Howrah District.

* Sm. Manimala Sett was also a brilliant student of this Department (2004) and at present she.is working as a teacher in Birshbpur Sikshaniketan High School of Howrah District.

* Sm. Sonia Mukherjee (2007) pased the examination of Schol Service Commission 2009.

* In the year 2008, Sm. Srija Burma Roy got Ist class. in B. a. Part -I Honours (1+1+1 New System) Examination 2008.
