The department of Political Science came into existence in 1961 as a separate discipline when the University of Calcutta introduced Political Science as a separate subject. Hence the new department of political science emanated from the old department of Economics with Prof. Subha Datta as the Head.
The department was also served by many illustrious teachers like Prof. Mohit Bhattacharya, Prof Subrata Ghosh, Prof. Anil Guha, Prof. Joyti Bhattacharya, Prof Bonita Aleaz and others. From the very beginning the department offered both the Honours (Advanced) and Pass (General) courses to the students.

The unique feature ofthe department is that through continous evaluation of the students on the basis of tutorials, seminar presentations, field study report, evenly distributed over the entire period of study.
Within the parameters laid down by the University, an attempt is being made by the department to create a student-centered model of teaching and learning. Student Seminar is a part of that model.
An attempt is made to instill confidence in the students by making them present papers (Power Point Presentation) on any current issue in the front of a small gathering including the Principal and teachers of other departments. They are being asked question on their presentations, so that public speaking comes to them perfectly.
