The Department of English

Welcome to the Department of English

The history of the Department of English dates back to the very foundation of Women’s Christian College in 1945. One of the founders, Ms. Stella Bose, the first Principal of the College headed the Department, with the help of Mrs. Allen and Mr. P.D. Bose, created a strong base for the study of English language and literature in this small college.

When the Honours course in the 3 year B.A. Degree Course (under the University of Calcutta) came into existence in the late 1940s, Ms. Asha Biswas and Ms. Anjali Chatterjee (who later became the Head of the Department of English after the demise of Ms. Stella Bose) joined the institution as faculty members of the Department of English.

In 1950 Ms. Stella Bose inducted into the Department Ms. Premi Gergen and Ms.Smritituku Ray (who later became the Vice Principal of Women’s Christian College and Head of the Department of English). Ms. Jyotsna Chatterjee left, Ms. Soma Chatterjee joined the Department of English in 1976. Miss Soma Roy became lecturer of English in the college when the ‘fifth post’ was introduced in the department in 1982 to cope with the growing number of students in the Honours and General Courses.

Dr. Sunetra Sinha joined the Department of English after the retirement of Ms. Anjali Chatterjee in 1987. Mr. Kushal Biswas was appointed lecturer, Women’s Christian College, after the retirement of Ms. Smritituku Ray in 1995 and Ms. Devalina Gopalan joined as a lecturer on December 1, 2005 after Dr. Sunetra Sinha resigned. The present Principal Dr. Ajanta Paul, who joined the college in 2008, also belongs to this department.

Departmental Activities

Apart from being in charge of teaching English in the various courses run by the College, the Department of English is active in organizing various workshops, seminars and special lecturers to build up a rich academic and cultural environment in the college from which the students can gain and develop interest in the pursuit of knowledge and truth. The department also holds regular quiz programs and film shows. The faculty members accompany the students to visit art exhibitions, paintings and cultural shows to grow in them a taste of appreciation and participation in the inner feelings of nature. They are also taken on educational tours to places of historical, cultural and aesthetic significance.

The faculty members encourage the students to also participate in community work like visiting old-age homes to extend company to the old and lonely hearts and distributing clothes and medicines to victims of calamities and disasters. The diverse kind of exposure given to the students helps them build up a strong personality and attitude towards life so that they can create a harmonious coexistence of the pressures of competition with the gentle and sweet experiences of nature, art and culture. At the same time they are able to face stiff and harsh opposition and extend sympathy and help to the needy and anguished.

The department supplements textual readings with the use of audio-visual media to broaden the horizons of students’ understanding and appreciation. Film shows based on text and documentary films are regularly shown in the department.

The faculty members closely monitor the overall progress in the studies of the students. The department regularly holds meetings amongst the teachers and the parents of the students to review the achievements and failures of the students and suggest corrective measures to be taken by the parents to achieve the desired results. The last teachers-parents meeting was held on March 16th 2009.
