The College Profile

AQAR of IQAC

Part A

The plan of action chalked out by the IQAC in the beginning of the year towards quality enhancement and the outcome achieved by the end of the year.

A comprehensive plan of action aimed at the overall development of the college was envisaged at the beginning of the year. The possibility of introducing automation in the college office was explored. A plan to update the college website was also on the anvil. Infrastructural improvements geared towards carving out separate spaces for the study and practice of Geographical Instrumentation Systems (GIS) and for the exclusive use of a Post-Graduate Study Centre under Netaji Subhas Open University (NSOU) were also sought to be implemented. Intent on fostering a holistic approach to education the IQAC had applied to the University of Calcutta for introduction of the National Service Scheme (NSS) Unit in the college. It also pondered the possibility of beginning an Eco Club in the college with a view to spreading awareness about the state of the environment and the need to address it.

The institution was partially successful in implementing the various schemes. The process of introducing automation in the college office has been initiated with the work-order for modules relating to ‘Students’ and ‘Payroll’ having been placed and two computers bought for this express purpose. The college obtained permission to function as a Study Centre under Netaji Subhas Open University with affiliation in the six PG courses assigned to it, namely, English, Bengali, History, Political Science, MSW and Mathematics.

The college website has been thoroughly updated. The AQAR of the previous year has been duly uploaded on it. A laboratory for GIS has been created as planned where students of the Geography Dept. may practise their skills on this component of their revised syllabus. As far as the introduction of the NSS Unit goes the college has obtained permission from the University of Calcutta to introduce one from the session 2009-2010. An Eco Club has been formed to work in collaboration with such leading organizations in the sphere as Greenpeace in order to sensitize students about issues related to the environment. Thus, it may be safely assumed that several of the objectives envisaged at the beginning of the year have been accomplished.

Part B

  1. Activities regarding the goals and objectives of the institution.

Women’s Christian College, Kolkata forges relentlessly ahead with its focused agenda of empowerment of women. This institution stands out from others of its kind, as a sizeable portion of its student community is made up of first generation literates. This section, grossly disadvantaged economically, is nurtured with particular zeal by a dedicated teaching faculty and caring non teaching staff. Apart from this, the college caters to the intellectual needs of students from minority groups along with those belonging to the majority category. It is with a sense of fulfillment that teachers steer this heterogeneous group in their quest for knowledge. New and complex areas of scholarship are introduced to the students through class lectures, special lectures, and student seminars and inter college academic exchanges. The use of audio visual teaching aids as well as field trips and excursions constitute a multidimensional approach aimed at stimulating the interest of the student towards her subject.  Interpersonal skills are developed through interaction with academicians of stature who are regularly invited to deliver lectures. Participation in in-house and inter college debates as well as inter college seminars and competitions are also instrumental in bringing latent talent to the forefront. Events such as Youth Parliament competitions call for serious involvement on the part of the college. Social awareness and social work is constantly encouraged.  Students thus overcome mental as well as material barriers and part ways with their alma mater confident, mature and ready to take on the world.
